Choosing the Right Roofing Material

Roofing material affects longevity, fire resistance, energy efficiency, and cost. Consider your local climate, roof pitch, and architectural style.

Asphalt Shingles (3-Tab): The most affordable and widely used roofing material. 3-tab shingles are flat, single-layer, and lightweight. They last 15–20 years and come in a limited range of colors. Best for budget-friendly projects and simple roof designs.

Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles: Thicker, multi-layer shingles that create a dimensional, shadowed look. More durable than 3-tab with a 25–30 year lifespan. Better wind resistance and a wider color selection. The standard choice for most residential re-roofing.

Metal Roofing: Steel or aluminum panels that last 40–70 years. Metal roofs are energy-efficient, fire-resistant, and handle snow shedding well. Available in standing seam, corrugated, and metal shingle profiles. Higher upfront cost but very low maintenance.

Slate / Tile: Premium materials with exceptional longevity (50–100+ years). Slate offers a natural stone look; clay and concrete tiles suit Mediterranean and Spanish-style homes. Heavy materials require reinforced framing. Very expensive but unmatched durability and curb appeal.

Understanding roof pitch

Roof pitch is the angle of the roof expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6/12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run). Steeper pitches have more surface area and require more material. If you are unsure of your pitch, measure the vertical rise over 12 inches horizontally using a level and tape measure.

Roofing material quantities

  • Standard shingles: 3 bundles per square
  • Architectural shingles: 3-4 bundles per square (check package)
  • Underlayment: 1 roll per 4 squares (approx 400 sq ft)
  • Ridge caps: 1 bundle covers about 35 linear feet of ridge
  • Drip edge: Measure the roof perimeter in feet

Add 10-15% for waste, especially on roofs with valleys, hips, and complex shapes.

Worked example

For example, for a 40×20 ft roof with a 6/12 pitch (pitch factor 1.12):

  1. Total roof area = 40 × 20 × 1.12 = 896 sq ft
  2. Roofing squares = 896 ÷ 100 = 8.96 squares
  3. Shingle bundles = 8.96 × 3 = 26.9 → 27 bundles
  4. Underlayment rolls = 8.96 ÷ 4 = 2.24 → 3 rolls
  5. Add 10% for ridge caps, starter strips, and waste: 30 bundles

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it matters
Not installing drip edgeDrip edge along eaves prevents water from wicking under the roof deck
Using too few nailsStandard 3-tab shingles need 4 nails each; in high-wind areas, use 6 nails
Ignoring attic ventilationProper ridge and soffit vents extend roof life — trapped heat damages shingles from below
