How to Use Pea Gravel

Pea gravel is a versatile, decorative aggregate that works well for many landscape projects. Its smooth, rounded texture makes it comfortable underfoot but less stable than angular crushed stone.

Walkways & Paths: Pea gravel creates a natural-looking path that drains well and has a pleasant crunch underfoot. Use edging (stone, metal, or wood) to keep gravel contained. Recommended depth is 2 to 3 inches over a landscape fabric base.

Garden Borders & Beds: Use pea gravel as a decorative ground cover around plants, shrubs, and trees. It suppresses weeds when laid 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric, retains soil moisture, and never decomposes like mulch.

Play Areas: Pea gravel's smooth edges make it a safe surface for children's play areas, sandboxes, and around play structures. It provides good drainage and cushions falls better than hard surfaces.

Drainage & French Drains: Pea gravel's round shape creates small gaps that allow water to flow through freely. It is commonly used in French drains, behind retaining walls, and around foundation footings to redirect groundwater.

Pea gravel uses

Pea gravel is smooth, rounded stone typically 3/8 to 1/2 inch in size. It is popular for pathways, playgrounds, dog runs, drainage areas, and decorative garden beds. Unlike crushed stone, pea gravel has no sharp edges, making it comfortable to walk on. It does shift underfoot and needs edging to stay in place. For driveways, use crushed stone instead as it locks together better.

Worked example

For example, for a 15×10 ft pathway, 3 inches deep:

  1. Area = 15 × 10 = 150 sq ft
  2. Volume = 150 × (3 ÷ 12) = 37.5 cu ft
  3. Cubic yards = 37.5 ÷ 27 = 1.39 yd³
  4. Weight = 1.39 × 1.3 = 1.81 tons
  5. Order 2 tons to account for spreading and settling
