Drywall and Plaster Guide

Drywall is the standard choice for most interior walls and ceilings, available in regular, moisture-resistant (green board), and fire-rated (Type X) varieties. Plaster provides a harder, more durable finish with better soundproofing but requires skilled application and more labor. Use drywall for most residential rooms and plaster for high-traffic areas or historical renovations where a traditional finish is desired.

Installation Tips

  • Use 5/8-inch drywall for ceilings to prevent sagging
  • Stagger drywall seams for a stronger finished wall
  • Apply joint compound in thin coats, sanding between each
  • Plaster requires a skilled application - consider hiring a professional for large areas
